You'd get many answers if there were a census of Black or African Americans' responses to the question, "What does it mean to identify as Black?" My Blackness is ever-present because of the juxtaposition of my Blackness and the heteronormative, white society in which I reside in.Blackness is rooted in and systemically tied to racism in this country. Unlike various European and white identities that traveled to the New World starting in the 17th century (Klein, 2020), my ancestors did not come here by choice. My African ancestors were kidnapped and marched to the west coast, where they were put in shackles and put in a ship's hull. In a forced voyage from the African coast across the Atlantic, termed the Middle Passage, Africans wereoverpacked, lying down without enough room to turn into a ship's hull. So many died from famine, disease, and suicide (Britannica, 2020) that sharks regularly followed the slave ships.
