Dr. McHugh did not want his great-granduncle's story to be lost, so he transcribed the letters, added maps and more than sixty 1870 era photographs to give the reader an 1870's view of the sights experienced by the Ingalls party. He assembled this material into a book format suitable for the enjoyment and education of his audience.
