Don't let the title fool you into believing this is a mystery novel. The "Dead Heart" refers to the landlocked African country of Chad. Bordered by the Sudan, Libya, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Nigeria and Niger it is truly located at the dead "Heart" of Africa. It became an independent republic in 1960 after seventy years as a French Colonial possession.This is a book about a determined young woman whose heart and skills are the truly remarkable things in this story. It is a memoir of the years she spent in Chad as a volunteer nurse during the country's turbulent 80's. She paints a vivid picture of the people she met and tended to on a daily basis.She worked with the people, the sick, the infirm, the young mothers giving birth, the villagers with the kinds of diseases we shudder to even think about, in a tiny facility with the most basic kinds of medicines, equipment and supporting personnel. Lina became the difference between life and death for the people of Chad. Braving the worst dangers, (scorpions poisonous snakes) she tended to her charges day and night with hardly a break for two years. Often serving as teacher and mentor she trained a cadre of local people in how to care for the sick, how to operate a medical laboratory and in preventive medicine. They loved her for it and she became widely known as the "Docteur." When we hear that a doctor is "on call" we think of someone who gets in his car, drives to a spotless nearby hospital, slips into sterilized garments, and performs a modest and well-assisted procedure. Not so in her case. She would have to perform her miracles with only a few medicines and instruments and the help of a book 'Docteur a Pied Nu'. Often afflicted herself (Malaria is nasty disease) she would brave the wilds in her determined effort to do what she could for the sick, injured and dying.
