"The Rookie" is the story of Police Officer Michael Farrell's first day on street patrol. Michael, a former construction worker, considers himself the embodiment of macho man. He firmly believes that women have no place in police work, but before the day is over, is forced to reconsider his opinion. He learns much about women and himself in 1,528 words. "The Child" catches nineteen year old Timothy Dooling burglarizing the home of a family while they frolic in their backyard pool. Drugs are not the only problem haunting Timothy. All is revealed in 1,468 words.
