While trying to put her life back together, Cervantes was drugged, beaten and held captive in a garage and a house for four years by a Santería sadist, a worshiper of the Santa Muerte cult. Her deep faith and trust in Jesus Christ, along with the never ending belief to see her children again, gave her the will to survive. After finally being rescued in 2006, Cervantes then spent almost two years in a physical and psychological hospital recovery program.
