Reseña del libro "1968 - My First Year in India with Johns Hopkins: : Tales of Indo-U.S. Mutual Cross Cultural Enlightenment (en Inglés)"
This book recounts the trials and tribulations, as well as the triumphs and tragedies of a young veterinarian's first exposure to the study of public health issues and research in a non-western country. Immediately after graduating from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California - Davis he joined a team of scientists in the School of Hygiene and Public Health at Johns Hopkins University who were studying tropical diseases in India that had never been diagnosed in the United States before. His first year in India provided the most interesting and fascinating educational experiences of cross cultural interactions. He had to adapt to the alien cultural characteristics to which he was exposed as well as to develop an insight into American cultural habits as viewed though the eyes of the Indians. Some of his more unusual and interesting veterinary clinical cases are presented and also brief descriptions of several Hindu and Muslim holidays are included. He eventually through individual grants studied and reported on: the ecological energetics of Indian cattle in their environment, the myth of the Holy cow, the epizootiology of Foot and Mouth Disease and bovine leukosis, as well as the efficiency of milk production in cross bred cows in India. Trips to: the holy Hindu city of Banaras; Buddha's site of enlightenment in the city of nearby Sarnath; and trekking in Nepal were all a once in a lifetime experiences. The first year in India was filled with eureka moments and fascinating experiences that should be shared by all. After receiving a multi-year competitive research grant from the National Academy of Sciences, he conducted similar studies in Shandong Province in China from 1987 to 1991.
